Grandmother's Freezer Ice Cream

Just in time for summer! This is our grandmother's ice cream recipe and it is wonderful. Add fresh strawberries or peaches for a real treat. (Microwave directions follow the regular)

  • 1 cup running over of sugar
  • 1/4 t. salt
  • 1 T. flour
  • 3 slightly beaten eggs
  • 1 quart milk
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • 1 pint half and half
  • 1/2 pint heavy cream
  1. Mix sugar, salt, and flour. Add eggs and stir until well mixed. Add milk. Stir well. Place over medium heat. Cook and stir until mixture coats spoon or beings to thicken. Remove from heat and stir in at least 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  2. When cool and ready to freeze in ice cream maker, add half and half and cream. Freeze according to ice cream maker directions. Let sit for at least an hour to harden.
  3. If adding fresh fruit, add when cream is soft frozen.
Microwave Directions
  1. Mix sugar, salt, and flour. Add milk. Stir well. Microwave at 80% power for 8 minutes (this may vary, depending on your microwave); stir 2-3 times. Add some to eggs to temper and then add eggs to milk. Microwave 2 minutes more, or until thick as described above.
  2. Follow directions above for steps 2-3.
